What if the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves kept existing?
Greetings.
It has been over 110 years since Portugal became a republic, on the 5th of October, 1910. Nowadays, many Portuguese people celebrate this date, as the major event going against the alleged tyranny of the old monarchy. People see it as backwards, stale and corrupt. Yet, something that always intrigued me and still makes me think is that: what if the Portuguese monarchy had continued into the modern day? Would it be as backwards and corrupt as people claim? What if our empire kept existing? Particularly, what if Brazil did not separate from the short-lived United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves? What if this union kept existing into the modern day and how would it fare out against the various historical obstacles along the way?

This will be the very first post being written and posted officially over on Ricol’s Blog, as opposed to TICs do ricol. I hope you guys have liked my older posts thusfar, I had to copy them over from WordPress and manually adjust them to my new Hugo way of doing things. Also I had to translate them to English, which also took some time. For the sake of keeping my old work, I kept the Portuguese versions of those posts available as an alternative language. Though, from here onwards, I’ll do my posts in English, except for rare occasions. Overall, I have been feeling really happy with how the blog looks, it looks modern but with some old school blood of the 90s, early 00s web. I find the blend to be perfect.

At a time when preemptive operating systems are greatly used in all kinds of devices, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and refrigerators, it is enough to go back 35+ years to notice that this reality was only reserved for business computers and supercomputers. At a time when 640 kilobytes of RAM memory was already impressive, it would be expected that multitasking was something impossible to implement on home desktop computers for individuals. Thus, it became necessary to develop a different technology, wanting, on one hand, to maintain the appearance and utility of a multitasking operating system, but, on the other hand, not consuming so many system resources.

As you may know, Windows 95 was one of the — if not the — operating systems that revolutionised the way we use personal computers. Released on 24 August 1995, back when the World Wide Web and the internet in general were still in their infancy, this operating system was a real sensation! Replacing the now-legendary Program Manager with the brand-new Start Menu and Taskbar (Windows Explorer), Windows 95 was one of the most groundbreaking operating systems of its time, and, personally, one of my favourites (even though I wasn’t around back then).
